Wario Wars

november 10, 2012

I remember when Wario made his big debut as the main villain to Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. I always thought he was a really weird yet very interestingly designed character; one of the main reasons probably being that he resembles a huge, dark, twisted Mario. Nintendo Power introduced him as being Mario's cousin, so I thought it was really strange that he has pointed ears; is he human?

Wario's base character is very simple. He is driven by greed, is obsessed with treasure and wealth, and will do whatever he can to obtain it, including joining either good guys or bad guys and betraying his comrades. He apparently farms on his free time and is quite an inventor and tinkerer which I find is really a fun tidbit.

I really love how Wario looks, he has such a strong visual presence and design, full of flavor and character; he has such a unique look! I think one of the things that got me really loving Wario was the comics published in Nintendo Power years ago titled Mario Versus Wario. In the comics, you get to see him interact with the rest of the typical Mario world cast and find out what his relationship with Mario is like. Though the happenings in the comic might not be faithful to how Miyamoto might have envisioned things to be like, I really like how it was done because it shows that there might be more to Wario's character than being a two-dimensional greedy treasure hunter. Not only that, but that there's a little more to Mario then the portrayed "goody-two shoes." Give the comics (and the Super Mario World one) a look when you can! =D It's an awesome read! I love them!
