It's such a shame that even if we've referred people to it, none of them want to give the 1997-2010 TV series King of Hill a chance. It's definitely one of my favorite TV shows, filled with a lot of heart, clever funny writing, and character growth, and it's comforting to see a cast filled with realistic-feeling, flawed, characters who, at their core are good people at the right times. The people I've talked to are generally repelled by their first impressions of the series because of the idea of it being about southern hicks or of it hitting "too close to home". I admit that when I first discovered the series, I kinda had a similar reaction about it being about “hicks”, but it's so much more than that and I learned that it's really unfair to judge the series on that initial idea alone.
There's not really much of a point of me summarizing what the series is about since you can just Wikipedia it for a more informative and much better written article but, I did want to bring to spotlight who the main protagonist is for the majority of the series because he's such a joy to watch.
Hank Hill, though, rigid, critical, and old-fashioned, is a good guy with his heart in the right place, and though many episode plots challenge his normal patterns of thinking, he learns and grows, to become a better husband, father, and friend, and overcomes the shackles of his own stern and emotionally abusive childhood.
Hank Hill isn't the protagonist to every episode, but he often plays a big part. Him and the supporting cast in the series are all very flawed characters, but we also get to see a lot of moments where the warm human sides of them really shine. I don't think me writing this will make any of you want to go and check out the series right away, but hopefully, it'll give the little nudge that'll make you just curious enough to maybe give it a chance.~ =)
