I want to look into getting a persistent world running for Terraria that we can play on. What would be the best way to do this? I hear about things called Hamachi (VPN client, I gather?) and such, but I'm not too sure what that is/how it works.

Ideally I would be able to host the server on Life in Aggro's webserver, but it is running Linux and I'm not sure how to get it running on that. I CAN run it on a spare Windows box here though, but we will be switching ISPs soon (maybe) and losing our static IPs.

So yeah, I definitely want a persistent server so people can go in and out as they please. Coupled with the Steam group, it should be a lot of fun for quick pick-up fun / PVP combat.

Anyone have advice or help that can be offered?

Ohhh, I'd love to join you guys.

It's just so hard to find a decent server recently. I would advise not using Hamachi, as it isn't very secure. It also has a tendency to lag the server a bit. If the host can figure out port-forwarding (I wouldn't doubt it, it isn't too hard), it's all-around better.

Though I might not be able to get on Skype/TS/Vent/whatever is being used... I think my mic is broken :|

I'll have to ask my friend next time I speak to him about how he got the server up when we played.

Well, I can setup my windows box no problem and do port forwarding on my router just fine, but if anyone knows how to setup on a linux box, that would be the most ideal solution.

I'm also curious if there is a way to host a server without using a persons IP address (in cases of dynamic addresses). Perhaps a form of DDNS, which I assume Hamachi does?

Yeah, there definitely is a way to do that.

I'm not sure how, though. (I know just enough to forward ports on my router :P)

I guess I'll have to start playing this again (if you can count 10ish minutes of not really knowing what I'm doing). Seems like everyone plays it now :D

Its fun, and I'm sure when your playing with a few people it will be even better, also easier to figure out.

Yes, this game really shines when playing with a group of friends. Though spreading loot evenly can be annoying if you do that, lol.

Errr, if I knew how to edit my post, I'd have done that to add this:

If you ever find that you're having trouble in progressing, just ask for some help! I've really played this through to endgame too many times already, and yet I can't wait to play through it again! :D
